A scaffold is a temporary
structure used to support access platforms, it is commonly used around the
façade of the building and inside elevator shafts.
Scaffolds consist of a main load
bearing vertical member “standard”, load distributing horizontal members
“ledgers”, diagonal members to resist the horizontal forces applied from the
users of the scaffold as well as the wind ”bracing”, and temporary working
platforms.
Whilst there are many types of
scaffoldings, the main concept remains the same within those elements.
There are various types of
scaffolds;
·
Cup
lock, modular, wedge lock, and tube and clamp scaffolds all share the same
concept when erecting, they are commonly used in fixed positions and share
similar working load capacity.
·
H-frames
and Aluminum frames are usually used on the façade of the building for light
work only, they are easy to erect but have a low safe working load.
·
Mobile
scaffolds are supported with caster wheels and outriggers, they are usually
used for interior work and maintenance work.
In
general, any temporary access platform is considered to be a critical equipment
when it comes to safety, these platforms are minimal by nature and will be
subjected to heavy human interaction on daily bases, accidents relating to
scaffolds, be it falling from heights or total collapse of the structure could
very likely lead to fatal injuries.
It is
very important to ensure the safety measures required are met before using any
scaffolding, this not only means that the scaffolding structure is secured from
collapsing, it also means that the users are safe from falling hazards.
Scaffolds
are commonly placed on the façade of the building as mentioned earlier, and due
to the risk factor, it is fairly easy to be asked to present safety
certification for the scaffold from the local authorities from an approved
third party inspection body, inspecting all scaffolds is a must when it comes
to ensuring safety and avoiding disruption of work.
Upon the
completion of the scaffolding inspection, an initial test report will be
issued, providing detailed information about the scaffolding and all the
findings, if any.
The
result of the inspection will be mentioned clearly, and in case of any
defect/remark found, the site engineer will be notified about the problem, and
instructed on how to fix it in order to pass the inspection.
Later on
a safety certificate will be issued carrying the B Safe Safety stamp, our
certificates and initial reports are made to be easy to understand, simplicity
and accuracy are our aim when it comes to certification and documentation.
